L'autoritratto fu dipinto dall'artista nella sua abitazione milanese di via Castelmorrone angolo via Goldoni nel 1908. Sullo sfondo case in costruzione e un treno che percorre la ferrovia oggi scomparsa nei pressi dell'attuale piazza Maria Adelaide di Savoia.
